ODRways, NUJS to organise Indian Mediation Week, Business Mediation Summits to spread Mediation Awareness

In furtherance of efforts to promote mediation in India, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Kolkata (NUJS) is organising an Indian Mediation Week (IMW), a pan-India mediation awareness campaign, in collaboration with Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) centre, ODRways.

Further, Business Mediation Summits will also be conducted in the four metro cities between December 10-15, as part of efforts to sensitize the startup industry and MSMEs with better dispute resolution practices and management tools.

ODRways is  a startup formed by two law students Pranjal Sinha and  Akshetha Ashok, and a software engineer, Vikram Kumar. It aims to change the way disputes are resolved in India. Co-founder, Pranjal Sinha was also awarded the JAMS Weinstein Fellowship earlier this year for his contributions to the field of ADR.

Started in 2015,  ODRways has 96 working mediators in 21 cities across India and has been recognised in the list of the top 12 ADR centers of India by the Union Department of Justice. It was also recognized by Google as the ‘Socially Most Innovative Platform of 2015’. In the last year, ODRways handled more than 1500+ disputes in India ranging from small stake consumer disputes to family matters to 400 crore worth mining disputes.

The Mediation Week campaign it spearheads is supported by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, and Justice Madan Lokur, member of the Supreme Court Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee. The campaign has also been endorsed by former Law Minister Salman Kurshid, Governor of West Bengal KN Tripathi, and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi, among others.

In the last one year, the Indian Mediation Week campaign has spread to 102 cities across India. It has more than 2000 law student volunteers working under it, and over 2,00,000 people have been directly sensitised about the benefits of mediation. As part of the same campaign, the Mediation Embassy, a first of its kind online platform, has been launched to track the level of mediation awareness in each city.

In order to prevent commercial disputes from getting caught in complicated procedures of the court, a Business Mediation Summit is also being organised in all four metro cities of India. The schedule for the same runs as follows:

  • Kolkata (10th December 2018), at National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata.
  • Chennai (12th December 2018), at Madras Managment Association
  • Mumbai (14th December 2018), at IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  • Delhi (15th December 2018), at PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry

There will be two panel discussions in each summit on the following themes:

  • How to make solving disputes easier?

The target audience for the event includes startups and MSMEs and the guest list for the event will include CEOs, Industrialists, MNCs, Banks, Traders associations, lawyers, mediators, Law Firm Partners,  arbitrators, judges, ADR centers across India etc.
