Patiala House to hear a plaint against President Mukherjee’s autobiography on Nov 23

Additional District Judge Vineeta Goyal yesterday heard a plaint against President Pranab Mukherjee seeking an injunction against his book “The Turbulent Years: 1980 – 1996”. The matter is in reference to portions of Mukherjee’s book that are allegedly hurtful to the people’s sentiments..Vishnu Jain, advocate for the petitioner, told the court that the plaintiffs were not against Mukherjee, the President, but rather against Mukherjee, the author of the book..“We have no problem with the President as much as it is to do with the author. The statements made by Mukherjee in his book have been made in his personal capacity.”.“The book contains several statements laid down in the plaint that are hurtful to the religious sentiments of the people and therefore should be deleted.”.Jain requested the bench to issue directions for deletion of the objectionable statements from the book and also issue a public notice of the deletion. He also told the court,.“The demolition of Babri Masjid was an act of absolute perfidy which should make all Indians hang their head in shame.”.Advocate Ruby represented the defendant in the matter on directions from the Law Ministry and stated that she required some time to go through the contents of the plaint and respond to the allegations. She accepted the notice on behalf of the President and recorded her appearance in the matter..The bench after due consideration, listed the matter for November 23 when the matter will be heard further.
