PIL before Punjab & Haryana High Court seeks CBI probe into violence at Lovely Professional University

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition has been filed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in relation to the recent violence witnessed at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab.

The plea was mentioned on Tuesday before a bench of Chief Justice of Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Justice Rohit Kapoor for an urgent hearing.

The Court agreed to hear the case on Wednesday.

Senior Advocate Gaurav Chopra, appearing along with advocate Arjun Sheoran, made the request for urgent listing of the case.

Chopra informed the Court that rioting, arson and looting took place at the university.

The PIL filed by a student of the LPU seeks a direction for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the violence.

LPU students resorted to a massive violence on Sunday after reports of alleged rape of a female student at the university campus. While the police have registered a criminal case to probe the allegations, they are yet to conclusively establish that any such incident took place.

Following massive destruction of property and looting of various shops at the campus, classes and other academic activities at LPU were suspended on September 28 for 10 days.

LPU Founder Ashok Mittal is a Member of Parliament (MP). He was initially a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
