Earlier this month, popular Punjab-based music company Desi Melodies announced an exclusive, multi-year global distribution deal with Universal Music India.

Universal Music India will now have exclusive rights to distribute Desi Melodies' recording catalogue, including past releases, future non-film releases, and other projects.

Leading on this transaction on behalf of Desi Melodies was co-founder and Partner of Anand & Anand & Khimani, Priyanka Khimani. Along with Khimani, Senior Associate Sheetal Tripathy, and Of-Counsel Astad Randeria worked on this transaction.

Universal Music was represented by its in-house legal team.

Speaking on the new deal, Khimani said in a press release,

"Global music audiences are taking to regional Indian music like never before. This is particularly true for Punjabi music, which has continued to dominate musical, non-film culture both in India and abroad. As a commercial lawyer and advisor working within the sector, particularly on behalf of artists and artist-led businesses – I am proud and happy to have had the opportunity to be part of this deal. It signals the coming of big things for the non-film, Indian music space and its artists."

One of the directors of Desi Melodies was quoted as saying in the release,

“Given the commercial and legal complexities that the Indian music industry is known for – particularly the non-film space – we are grateful for Priyanka’s support and advice. She worked with us tirelessly from start to finish, and her experience and expertise has helped us navigate this space both effectively and productively."

This transaction is said to be "one of the biggest" distribution deals that the Indian non-film music industry has seen in the recent past.

Desi Melodies has about 5.58 million subscribers on YouTube, with 1.6 billion plays on its official channel.
