Things took a dramatic turn in the hearing of the Radia Tapes matter today when Justice GS Singhvi refused to hear Senior Counsel Rajeev Dhavan prompting Dhavan to go on a rant against the Judge. The incident happened in court room 2 of the Supreme Court after the Court had adjourned the matter for December 2.
When the matter came up for hearing before a Division Bench of Justices G S Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda today morning, the Court directed the Centre and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file their response on a plea seeking action on the irregularities in some transactions identified by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO).
The Court then adjourned matter for December 2. Dhavan, representing one of the news magazines in the matter, took strong objection to this and demanded that he be heard today itself. When the Court refused to entertain him, an agitated Dhavan said,
“It is highly unfortunate. I don’t want to say this at a time when my lordship is retiring but I have to say it is highly unfortunate. You are denying me an opportunity to respond on the plea. It is highly arbitrary.”
As Dhavan pressed with his statements, a composed Justice Singhvi answered in a repetitive “very well” and recused himself from the matter and said that the matter will have to be heard by another Bench.
