Salman Khan files defamation suit against NRI who blamed Khan for unsuccessful land transaction

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has filed a defamation suit before the Mumbai City Civil Court against one Ketan Kakkad, a Non Resident Indian (NRI) and others for allegedly making derogatory remarks against him and his family over a land sale transaction..Khan also filed an application for interim relief and moved an application today for urgent relief seeking blocking/ suspending/withdrawing the social media accounts of the defendants where the derogatory content was shared.Advocate Pradeep Gandhy, appearing for Khan, stated that the defendants had made false, disparaging and defamatory allegations in videos, posts and tweets causing harm and loss to Khan, his family members along and his business ventures.Advocate Abha Singh appearing for Kakkad, vehemently opposed grant of interim relief stating that the defendants were served with the papers only on Thursday evening. She prayed for some time to go through the pleadings and file an appropriate response to the suit.After hearing both counsel, Additional Sessions Judge Anil H Laddhad granted time to Kakkad and other defendants to file their replies and posted the application for hearing on January 20, 2022..In the suit filed through law firm DSK Legal, Khan has sought injunctive reliefs against the defendants in relation to various social media platforms.Along with Kakkad, the suit also arraigned other individuals, social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube along with their Indian counterparts.The plea pointed out that Kakkad had attempted to purchase a plot of land beside Khan’s farmhouse in Panvel; however that transaction was cancelled by the authorities on the ground that it was illegal.However, after the said transaction was cancelled, Kakkad started raising false and baseless accusations that the transaction had been cancelled at the behest of Khan and his family members.In the recent past, Khan’s team came across several videos in relation to Khan’s farmhouse in Panvel uploaded on the social media accounts of the defendants.Aggrieved by the same, Khan filed the present suit.Khan stated in his suit that there is no shred of truth in the defamatory comments made against him.“Comments made by Defendants travel well beyond the scope of fair comment” the suit stated..Follow Bar and Bench channel on WhatsAppDownload the Bar and Bench Mobile app for instant access to the latest legal news.
