The Supreme Court Collegium has resolved that Additional Judge, Justice Arun Kumar be made a permanent judge of the Patna High Court.
A resolution passed to this effect on Monday states,
“Taking into consideration the material on record, the Collegium finds Mr. Justice Arun Kumar, Additional Judge, suitable for being appointed as Permanent Judge.
In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend, for the present, that Mr. Justice Arun Kumar, Additional Judge be appointed as Permanent Judge of the Patna High Court against one of the existing vacancies.”
The Patna High Court had recommended that Justice Arun Kumar’s current post as Additional Judge be made permanent last January. The State of Bihar had also endorsed the recommendation.
After obtaining his law degree from Patna University in 1987, Justice Arun Kumar practiced in the Patna High Court. He dealt with civil, criminal and Constitutional matters for a decade. He was appointed Additional District and Sessions Judge in 1997. In 2006, he was promoted to District Judge.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Patna High Court in 2016 and is due to retire on August 21, 2018.
Whereas five other names were also recommended by the Patna High Court for being made permanent judges, the Collegium only considered Justice Kumar’s name since he is due to retire soon. As noted in the resolution,
“Since Mr. Justice Arun Kumar (mentioned at Sl. No. 5 above) is going to retire on attaining the age of superannuation on 21st August, 2018, the Collegium considers it appropriate to take up for consideration, for the present, only his case. The proposal pertaining to other Additional Judges whose current term would be expiring much later will be taken up for consideration at appropriate stage.“
The other names to be considered by the Collegium in due course are Justices Birendra Kumar, Arvind Srivastava, Vinod Kumar Sinha, Sanjay Priya and Sanjay Kumar.
