Senior Advocate Surojit Nath Mitra has been appointed as the new Advocate General (AG) for the State of West Bengal..A notification for his appointment was issued today.Earlier, Senior Advocate Kishore Datta had resigned from the post after the All India Trinamool Congress lost the State Assembly elections to the BJP..Mitra has been in legal practice since March 1983. He studied law and economics at University of Calcutta between 1978 and 1982 and practices in the areas of civil and commercial law.With over four decades of practice, he has represented various corporate entities and private litigants. In 2023, Mitra appeared for the Governor (Chancellor) in a case challenging the appointment of vice-chancellors to various State universities. He has also served as arbitrator in commercial disputes.
