Sexual Harassment allegations: Mention before some other Bench, CJI Ranjan Gogoi

Advocate ML Sharma today sought to mention a matter relating to the sexual harassment allegations against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

Adverting to advocate Prashant Bhushan’s statements to The Wire on how he had helped the complainant, Sharma said,

“Bhushan is behind the entire sexual harassment allegations against CJI.”

CJI Gogoi, however, asked Sharma to mention the matter before some other Bench.

“Mention before some other Bench, not this Bench”, said Gogoi J.

Prashant Bhushan had reportedly told The Wire that Bains had called him soon after the stories bringing to light the allegations against CJI Gogoi were published. Bains said that he had met with the CJI on the night of April 19, a day before the Supreme Court took suo motu note of the matter.

The story also mentions that Bhushan, along with this father Shanti Bhushan and lawyers Kamini Jaiswal and Vrinda Grover, helped filed the affidavit of the Supreme Court staffer who levelled the allegations against CJI Gogoi.

Today, after CJI Gogoi refused to hear the mentioning, it is learnt that Sharma later mentioned the matter before Justice Arun Mishra, who said that he does not hear mentioning of matters.

Earlier, CJI Ranjan Gogoi had invited lot of controversy by presiding over a Bench which suo motu took up the issue relating to sexual harassment allegations against him.

A Bench of Justices Arun Mishra, Rohinton Nariman, and Deepak Gupta last week ordered a probe into allegations made by Utsav Bains in relation to the charges against the Chief Justice. The probe will be conducted by former Supreme Court judge, Justice AK Patnaik.

Meanwhile, a three-member panel of Supreme Court judges has started conducting hearings on the sexual harassment allegations levelled by the former staffer.

Last week, the Delhi High Court refused to entertain a petition seeking to restrict the media from reporting on the sexual harassment allegations against CJI Gogoi.
