Shekhar Bobby Saraf first NLSIU graduate to become a High Court Judge

The Calcutta High Court is all set to get six new judges from the Bar. Among the six lawyers who are being elevated is Shekhar Bobby Saraf, a graduate of National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

Saraf will be the first NLSIU graduate to be elevated to the Bench.

He graduated from NLSIU in 1996, and initially worked with Arthur Anderson for about two years before moving to the Calcutta High Court.

In 1998, he joined the Chamber of RN Bajoriaji, where he was handling revenue matters. He worked in Senior Advocate Bajoriaji’s Chamber for a year, after which he set up his own corporate and litigation practice.

He is the Senior Counsel for the Income Tax Department at the High Court. He was also the Senior Standing Counsel for the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Department for about five years.

The other five lawyers, who are being elevated are Rajshekhar Mantha, Sabyashachi Bhattacharyya, Protik Prokash Banerji, Mousumi Bhattacharyya and Rajjoshri Bharadaj.

The Centre has approved these six names recommended by the Supreme Court collegium as judges of the Calcutta High Court and the formal warrant of appointment from the President is awaited.
