Supreme Court asks e-committee to provide for compounding of offences on e-courts portal

The Supreme Court on Monday directed its e-committee to consider a plea seeking changes to the e-courts mechanism/ portal for compounding of offences processed electronically.

A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana passed the direction on a plea by Prabhjot Singh Dhillon.

"The Registry is directed to forward the complete set of papers to the e-committee of this Court to consider the same and make an endeavour to make the necessary correction in the portal," the Court directed.

Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the petitioner, said that the recommendations made by a High Court have remained under consideration and that changes to the portal are necessary for better functioning of e-courts.

"Now, with electronic surveillance being brought in law, compounding is getting carried out on the police portal, but after 60 days it gets transferred to e-courts portal. Only one insertion is needed, that it can be compounded and it will (be reflected as) not guilty. The High Court recommendation in 2024 was twice approved by the Committee. They said it is under consideration. This is of paramount importance for the better functioning of e-Courts," he said.

The Court concurred and directed that the petition be placed before the e-committee for considering necessary changes to the portal.
