A Supreme Court bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna sat well beyond normal court hours on Tuesday to hear cases. .The bench sat till close to 6.40 pm today though the Supreme Court's usual working hours is from 10.30 am to 4 pm. .Even on Friday last week, the same bench had sat beyond the court hours.Justice DY Chandrachud had then said that when judges sit beyond usual court hours to hear cases, it eats into their time in chambers normally spent for research and writing judgments, and not into their family time.During the sitting today, when a lawyer pointed out that it was 6:15 pm and the matter required a detailed hearing, the judges remarked that no time was inconvenient for them."No time is of inconvenience to us. But yes this will take long, we will take it on a Monday or Friday," said Justice Chandrachud. One of the matters heard by the bench before it rose for the day was in relation to the right of women to maternity leave..Justice Chandrachud had last week also called for a change in the way lawyers work in the Supreme Court, asking them to realise that the Court's time is valuable."Lawyers complain that matters are not listed, but seek adjournment when their cases come up," the judge stated, adding that adjournment can be sought only on account of COVID-19 or a bereavement in the family, and not otherwise. The judge made the remark when a lawyer appearing before him sought adjournment in a case.
