Supreme Court declines to entertain plea challenging decision to cancel AoR exam for 2026

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain petitions challenging the top court's recent administrative decision to cancel the Advocate-on-Record (AoR) examination for the year 2026.

The petitions challenged the notification issued by the Registrar (Judicial) and Secretary to the Board of Examiners on April 30 which said that AoR examination will not be held this year.

A Bench of Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice PB Varale asked the petitioners to instead submit a representation to the Chief Justice of India. The Court expressed hope that the CJI would consider the matter sympathetically.

As of May 4, 2026 a total 3,791 AoRs are registered with the Supreme Court.
