As Supreme Court judge, Justice Deepak Gupta retires from office today amid the third phase of the national COVID-19 lockdown, his brother and sister judges of the top Court recorded speeches to bid a virtual adieu to the judge.
A video was compiled with brief farewell messages from Chief Justice SA Bobde along with Justices Arun Mishra, RF Nariaman, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan, L Nageswara Rao, Sanjay Kishan Kaul, MM Shanatanagoudar, Indu Malhotra, Indira Banerjee, KM Joseph, Hemant Gupta, R Subhash Reddy, MR Shah, Ajay Rastogi, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Aniruddha Bose, AS Bopanna, SR Bhat, V Ramasubramanian and Hrishikesh Roy.
Earlier today, the Supreme Court Bar Association also conducted a virtual farewell through the Zoom platform during which the SCBA President, Dushyant Dave and Attorney General KK Venugopal rendered speeches. Justice Deepak Gupta also rendered a farewell address on the occasion.
Born to a family of lawyers in Himachal Pradesh, Justice Gupta obtained his law degree from the Delhi University in 1978. He practised in the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, and was appointed a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2004.
He served as Acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court twice, also heading the Green Bench of the High Court before he was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court in 2013. In 2016, he was transferred to take charge as the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. In February 2017, Justice Deepak Gupta was elevated as a Supreme Court judge. Justice Gupta attains 65 years of age tomorrow i.e. May 7.
