Supreme Court take suo motu cognisance of Odisha courts imposing cleaning of police stations as bail conditions

The Supreme Court of India has initiated a suo motu case over Orissa High Court and district courts in Odisha ordering certain accused persons to clean police stations as conditions for bail.

The case will be heard by a Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi today.

According to recent news reports, various courts in Odisha including the High Court had directed accused persons to clean police stations for release on bail.

Many such cases involved Dalit and Adivasis who were involved in anti-mining protests in the State.

According to website Article 14, the Odisha High Court and district courts have issued at least eight such bail orders since 2023.
