The Supreme Court on Tuesday took suo motu congizance of the issue of river pollution in Rajasthan.

The Bench of Justice VIkram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta said it has directed the court registry to register a public interest litigation (PIL) petition on the issue.

"Hon'ble CJI will take a call and pass appropriate order," Justice Nath said, while announcing the decision.

It is not clear yet whether the Court has taken suo motu congizance of pollution of any specific river or the issue raised is about more than one river.

Mongabay India had recently reported about pollution in Jojari River. It was reported that for nearly two decades, 50 villages and hamlets in Rajasthan are suffering from the impacts of the polluted river.

Note: This is a developing story.
