Ten Additional Judges appointed to Madras High Court [Read Notification]

The newly appointed Judges also reportedly include a married couple, Justices Murali Shankar Kuppuraju and Thamilselvi T Valayapalayam.

The Central Government on Tuesday cleared the appointment of ten judicial officers, including a husband-wife duo, as Additional Judges of the Madras High Court.

Two notification to this effect were issued, intimating the appointment of the following officers as High Court Judges:

  • Govindarajulu Chandrasekharan

  • AA Nakkiran

  • Veerasamy Sivagnanam

  • Ganesan Ilangovan

  • Ananthi Subramanian

  • Kannammal Shanmuga Sundaram

  • Sathi Kumar Sukumara Kurup

  • Murali Shankar Kuppuraju

  • Manjula Ramaraju Nalliah

  • Thamilselvi T Valayapalayam

Notably, two of the newly appointed judges, Justices Murali Shankar Kuppuraju and Thamilselvi T Valayapalayam are reportedly also married to each other. Both judges are said to have belonged to the same 1995 batch of the Tamil Nadu Judical Services, and got married to each other in 1996 after falling in love.

Eight of the newly appointed Judges are set to serve a two year term from the date they assume charge of their office.

However, the terms of Justices Ananthi Subramanian and Kannammal Shanmuga Sundaram have been fixed differently. As per the notification, Justice Subramanian has been appointed to serve till July 30, 2022, whereas Justice Sundaram has been appointed until July 19, 2022.

All the judges were recommended for elevation to the Madras High Court in September this year by the Supreme Court Collegium.

With their appointment, the working strength of the Madras High Court rises to 63 judges, as against a sanctioned strength of 75 judges.
