Chief Justice Oka has delivered several commendable decisions on freedom of expression, freedom to protest, the rights of the homeless to rehabilitation, and a plethora of other decisions that directly affect the lives of citizens.

Further, Chief Justice Oka had recently issued a direction that trial courts ought not to be called “lower courts”, which reflects an important shift in institutional thinking about the "hierarchy of courts".

Roots Resource is a free, dynamic database of judgments and related material targeted to help trial lawyers who represent vulnerable clients.

It is a collaborative platform for lawyers to share their research, discuss strategies to improve outcomes in cases, and to find solidarity within the larger community of lawyers working to strengthen access to justice.

The platform has been developed with the advice of certain trial lawyers practising in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana, who have been representing marginalized individuals and communities.

Among others, the advisors to the Roots Resource include Justice Madan Lokur, Dr Kalpana Kannabiran, Advocate Seema Misra, Advocate Geeta Ramaseshan, and Bar & Bench Editor-in-Chief, Pallavi Saluja.

Speaking about the initiative, Roots Resource Founder Swathi Sukumar said,

"The Resource aims to increase the standard of lawyering and adjudication, by increasing the availability of good quality, free materials, and creating a platform for professional engagement on laws that affect the most vulnerable litigants."
