Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad, who argued against grant of bail to Umar Khalid in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case registered against him in connection with the Delhi Riots, has said that the order will now be used to spin a narrative against the judiciary..Speaking in reaction to the Karkardooma Court's rejection of bail sought by Khalid today, Prasad said,"When Ishrat Jahan gets bail, faith in judiciary is restored, but when others are rejected, then you'd want to play your student activist card. So now is the time when a narrative will come in. We have to be careful with that narrative," Prasad said. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, who denied Khalid bail today, had earlier granted bail to former Congress councillor from North-East Delhi Ishrat Jahan in connection with a Delhi Riots case..On the merits of the order, Prasad said that it vindicates the probe."The way I look at this order is somewhere, the point of investigation has been vindicated and I say so because the investigation stepped in very late. The DPSG chat, etc., actually indicates conspiracy. Investigation stepped in very late...Violence was there but main characters laid low. Bail rejection (has) established prima facie of the crux of investigation," he said.He expressed that he was now fearful about the narrative which the accused will try to bring in..The Delhi Police had arrested Khalid in this case on September 13, 2020 and chargesheeted him on November 22 the same year under various sections of the UAPA and the Indian Penal Code. Khalid moved a bail plea in July 2021, and several hearings later, the Court reserved its order earlier this month.
