Venture Intelligence H1 2015: AZB tops PE table; Khaitan tops M&A

Venture Intelligence recently released its legal advisors league table for Private Equity and M&A transactions for the first half of the year.

Private Equity

AZB & Partners tops the Legal Advisor league table for Private Equity transactions during the first six months of the 2015.

According to the Venture Intelligence League Tables, AZB advised on 23 PE deals worth $2.4 million, followed by Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas ($1.2 million across 12 deals), Khaitan & Co ($827 million across 10 deals) and J. Sagar Associates ($823 million across 9 deals).

The erstwhile Amarchand Mangaldas took the fifth position with 8 deals valued at $641 million. It is understood that Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas did not submit its deals to Venture Intelligence.

AZB top PE deals included the $383 million investment by Apax Partners in Shriram City Union Finance, also advised by Khaitan and the $150 million investment by TPG Capital into Manipal Health Enterprises, also advised by Tatva Legal and DSK Legal. Both the deals were completed in the first quarter of the year.

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas PE deals included the $50 million investment by OCP Asia into DQ International and $70 million investment by IDFC Alternatives into OTPC India.

IndusLaw did the maximum number of PE deals (27) in the first half of the year.

The new entrants to the PE league table included Veritas Legal, Verist Law, Altum Law, LegaLogic Consulting and Morgan Lewis

M&A

Khaitan & Co topped the M&A League Tables for the first six months of 2015 advising on 14 deals with a value of $2.23 billion. Khaitan was followed by AZB & Partners, which advised on 16 deals worth $1.9 billion. Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas took the third spot with 9 deals valued at $1.35 billion.

Amarchand Mangaldas, before its split, had advised M&A deals worth $1.08 billion (across seven deals).

Khaitan’s M&A deals during the period included the $315 million buyout of Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals by Advent International & Temasek, also advised by JSA, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and the $400 million acquisition of Freecharge by Snapdeal, where AZB and Themis Associates also acted.

AZB’s biggest M&A transaction included the $800 million acquisition of womens health business of Famy Care by Mylan Laboratories. The other advisors on the deal included Luthra & Luthra, Crawford Bayley and Platinum Partners.

The first half also saw a lot new entrants like Veritas Legal and Patanjali Associates entering the Venture Intelligence Legal Advisors for M&A league table.
