Students at the Himachal Pradesh Law University (HPNLU) are now paying five times more to reappear for examinations than they were just a few months ago.

Official University notices showed the per-paper reappear fee at ₹1,000 as recently as November 2025. By March 2026, it had jumped to ₹5,000 for undergraduate (UG) students and ₹7,000 for postgraduate (PG) students without any public explanation for the increase.

Students say that the financial burden is significant, particularly for those from economically modest backgrounds.

"Because the university charges this fee separately for the mid-sem and end-sem components of a reappear, a student is forced to shell out a staggering ₹10,000 to clear a single subject. This exorbitant pricing has left the student community reeling, particularly those from economically modest backgrounds," a student told Bar and Bench.

Bar & Bench sent queries to HPNLU seeking the date on which the revision came into effect, the authority that approved it and whether any fee waiver or concession exists for students from economically weaker sections. No response was received at the time of publication.
