The Legal Aid Society [NUJS-LAS] of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata is an autonomous student-run body whose main objective is to provide pre-emptive legal aid by promoting awareness about the law through legal education and counselling.

The aim is to use unique legal know-how to contribute to the goal of social justice by inducting students to use their theoretical knowledge of law in the practical world to provide free legal aid to the ones most in need of it through preventive, remedial, activist and reformative functions.

The NUJS-LAS has a long history of success in the various activities we undertake. It is constantly looking to expand the scope of the project and inculcate an atmosphere of inclusiveness both within and without the college.

Agenda of the Conference

The Sundarbans Climate Justice Partnership between Kings College London, Jadavpur University, Doughty Street Chambers and the West Bengal National University Of Juridical Sciences strives to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on people living in the Indian Sundarbans and hold those responsible accountable. The initiative seeks to empower affected communities by increasing chances of access to climate justice through pop-up legal clinics and transnational soft law legal remedies to utilise the OECD mechanisms and hold industries most directly complicit for the climate crisis in Sundarbans accountable.

In light of these developments, the NUJS Legal Aid Society, in furtherance of its collaboration with King’s College, London and Doughty Street Chambers, UK hopes to bring together experts across law, policy, anthropology, and geology as well as journalists and stakeholders to discuss some of these questions on July 23 and 24, 2022, at the NUJS campus in Kolkata.
