Central Government appoints Javed Iqbal Wani as Judge of Jammu & Kashmir High Court [Read Notification]

Wani is son-in-law of J& K High Court Bar Association (Srinagar Wing) President Mian Qayoom, who has been under preventive detention for alleged secessionist ideologies since abrogation of Article 370 of Constitution.

The Central Government has notified the appointment of Javed Iqbal Wani as a judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

The notification issued to this effect today states,

"In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Javen Iqbal Wani, to be the Judge of Common High Court for the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union territory of Ladakh with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."
Notification

The appointment has been made pursuant to a Collegium recommendation made in January this year.

Wani has served as Senior Additional Advocate General for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

He is the son-in-law of Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association (Srinagar Wing) President Mian Qayoom, who has been under preventive detention since the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in August last year.

Last month, a Division Bench of the High Court upheld his continued detention under the J&K Public Safety Act, 1978.
