The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended one advocate and three judicial officers for elevation as judges of the Calcutta High Court.

As per the Collegium Resolution dated September 11, the names of advocate Sandipan Ganguly and judicial officers Bibek Chaudhuri, Madhumati Mitra, and Subhasis Dasgupta have been approved for appointment as High Court judges.

The recommendation has been made following perusal of the files prepared by the Chief Minister and the Governor of West Bengal, in addition to consultation with colleagues familiar with the affairs of the Calcutta High Court.

The above names were recommended by the High Court Collegium in November last year. Whereas certain complaints has been made against some of the proposed names, the Supreme Court Collegium concurred with the High Court Collegium that the same were baseless and deserved to be ignored.

Two other names – advocate Debabrata S Roy and judicial officer Manojit Mondal – were also recommended for elevation by the High Court Collegium. However, the Supreme Court Collegium has intimated that it will take a call on their elevation after some time.

“… having regard to the material on record and all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that their cases deserve to be deferred. Their proposal would be taken up for consideration by the Collegium after some time.”

Accordingly, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended that the above four persons be appointed as Calcutta High Court judges, in the order of seniority fixed by existing practice.
