Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, as per a notification issued on November 1, 2019.

Justice Thangkhiew will take over as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court following the transfer of  Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal to Madhya Pradesh High Court. Chief Justice Mittal will be sworn in as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court on November 3, 2019.

Justice Thangkhiew completed his schooling from St Edmund’s, graduated from St Edmund’s College with honours in Economics and completed his Bachelor of Legislative Law from Delhi University in 1990. He then enrolled as an Advocate in the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh between 1990 and 1991.

He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in 2010. He mainly practiced in the areas of civil law, constitutional law and company law.

Justice Thangkhiew was appointed as a Judge of the Meghalaya High Court on November 17, 2018. He was appointed subsequent to the recommendations of the Chief Justice of Meghalaya to the Supreme Court collegium on February 26, 2018. He was the first tribal Khasi Advocate to be sworn in as a Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, thus making history.
