Senior Advocate NL Rajah has been appointed legal advisor to Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on a pro bono basis.

The appointment was notified by the Governor’s Secretariat through office proceedings dated September 2.

The order specifically states that the appointment will not carry any remuneration, salary, honorarium or other financial benefits.

Rajah will be entitled to undertake official travel within Tamil Nadu and outside the State with the specific approval of the Governor, subject to orders of the Tamil Nadu government.

The appointment has taken immediate effect and will continue until further orders.

Rajah enrolled as an advocate in 1986 after graduating from Madras Law College and began his career in the chambers of former Tamil Nadu Advocate General S Govind Swaminadhan.

He was designated a Senior Advocate by the Madras High Court in 2016 and has practised extensively in commercial litigation, arbitration, constitutional and writ matters, consumer law and energy law.

He is also a founding director of the Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre and has served on the Madras High Court's Heritage Committee and Arbitration Committee.

Rajah was also part of an expert committee of the Law Commission of India that examined changes to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act.

Apart from his legal practice, Rajah has a longstanding interest in the history and heritage of the Madras High Court.

He has edited books on the court's history and architecture and has been associated with heritage walks conducted within the High Court campus.
