Meta Platforms, the owner of social media intermediaries Facebook and Instagram, told the Delhi High Court on Tuesday that Srinagar Member of Parliament (MP) Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi's Facebook page was blocked following a notice from law enforcement agencies.

The submission was made before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma who was hearing Mehdi's challenge to the order restricting him from accessing his Facebook page.

"The page was taken down pursuant to a law enforcement agency’s notice," the counsel stated.

She then sought time to produce the order before the Court.

The lawyer appearing for Mehdi argued that he was not informed about what the offending material was on his Facebook page.

"Nobody has said what the offending material was on my page... I am an MP and a religious leader," the counsel said.

Justice Sharma gave Meta time to file its reply and listed the case for further consideration on September 20.

Ruhullah Mehdi is a member of the National Conference and the MP from Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency.

He approached the High Court challenging the restriction imposed on his Facebook page in India since March 3, 2026.

According to his plea, he learnt about the restriction on his Facebook page only when he attempted to access his page on March 3. According to the petition, neither the government nor Meta provided him with a copy of the notice, reasons for the action or an opportunity to be heard.

As per the petition, Section 79(3)(b) does not permit a blanket restriction of an entire account without identifying specific unlawful content and complying with the safeguards under the Information Technology Rules, 2021.

Mehdi has contended that the restriction infringes his fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19(1)(a) and 21 and also affects his ability as an elected representative to communicate with constituents and participate in democratic discourse.

The petition was filed through advocates Tamanna Pankaj, Archit Krishna, Priya Vats, Ashutosh Shukla and Harshil Jain.
