The appointment of Justice Vibhu Bakhru as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court is a moment of quiet but profound significance—not just for the institution, but for the legal community in Karnataka. As someone whose legal journey began in the Karnataka High Court, whose parent Bar remains the Bangalore Bar, and who later moved to New Delhi to practice before the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court, I view this transition with both reflection and great anticipation.

A Commercial Vision for A Commercial Age

Bengaluru’s exponential growth as a global technology hub has brought with it a surge in complex commercial activity. Unsurprisingly, the Karnataka High Court has seen a parallel evolution in its commercial law practice—one that is both dynamic and sophisticated. The High Court already boasts a strong Bench and an increasingly specialised Bar. With Justice Bakhru at its helm, it is poised to emerge as one of the country’s premier destinations for commercial dispute resolution.

Justice Bakhru brings with him not just vast experience in commercial law but also the ability to apply that experience with speed, clarity, and precision. His leadership will no doubt complement the efforts of the existing Bench in elevating the Court’s national standing, particularly in the area of complex commercial litigation.

A Technological Torchbearer for A Tech Capital

Justice Bakhru is widely acknowledged as one of the most technology-forward judges in the country. Long before “paperless courts” became a buzzword, his courtrooms had already adopted that mode. He uses technology not as an accessory but as a tool to enhance transparency, improve judicial efficiency, and reduce delays. Known for his work ethic, he combines enormous industry with technological efficiencies.

In Bengaluru—the undisputed technology capital of India—this approach feels natural, even necessary. His stewardship could well see the Karnataka High Court become the most technologically advanced high court in the nation. That would not only be symbolically fitting but institutionally transformative.

A Mind of Precision and Principle

Having appeared before him on numerous occasions, I can attest to Justice Bakhru’s formidable intellect and principled judicial temperament. His background as a qualified Chartered Accountant adds a rare dimension to his legal reasoning—his understanding of both the letter and spirit of commercial law is unmatched.

But what truly stands out is the rigour of his thought. Court may rise, but his analysis does not rest. His judgments are always well-reasoned, grounded in precedent, and rich in conceptual clarity. The questions that fall from his Bench are incisive and at times surgical. They compel counsel to think deeper and articulate better.

Elevating The Courtroom

There are no “non-effective” hearings in his court. Every appearance is a test of readiness. Whether on the original side, in writ jurisdiction, or in arbitration-related matters, Justice Bakhru is known for clearing his board with quiet determination. His efficiency, his ability to remain composed, and his discipline are all traits that make him a fantastic judge and the Bar’s delight.

He can be exacting but never discouraging—pushing young lawyers to find their feet, while simultaneously challenging seasoned counsel to elevate their arguments. Few may remember today that he gave up a highly lucrative counsel practice—one of the most sought-after in Delhi—to serve the Bench. That decision reflects not only courage but also deep commitment to public service.

A Bittersweet Farewell and A Fortunate Welcome

His departure is a real loss to the Delhi High Court, where his intellect and integrity were cherished by Bench and Bar alike. But for Karnataka, it is a moment of good fortune. As the High Court enters this new phase, it does so under the leadership of a judge whose mind is sharp, whose methods are modern, and whose motives are deeply anchored in justice.

As the Karnataka High Court turns a new page under his leadership, I can only say this: Justice Vibhu Bakhru’s tenure promises to be one of transformation, driven by intellect, efficiency and integrity. The Karnataka High Court is fortunate—and poised—for a new era.
