After DMK, West Bengal Congress moves Supreme Court against SIR of electoral rolls

The Congress party's West Bengal unit has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ordered by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the State.

The matter was mentioned by the counsel for the petitioner before Justice Surya Kant who is hearing the Bihar SIR case.

He sought listing of the matter on Tuesday along with Bihar SIR case.

"The Bihar matter is listed tomorrow. We want the matter listed tomorrow with the Bihar SIR case," the counsel said.

He also claimed that people are approaching the party citing lapses in the process and that has prompted the party to move the top court.

"It is upto the CJI to decide whether the WB matter will also come before us," the Bench said.

The counsel then pointed out that other similar matters concerning SIR are also coming up tomorrow along with Bihar SIR matter.

The Bench then agreed to list the matter on Tuesday along with Bihar SIR case.

The ECI had first directed a Special Intensive Revision in June 2025. Multiple petitions, including those filed by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the National Federation for Indian Women (NFIW), are already pending before the Supreme Court challenging that order.

Despite that, the ECI proceeded with SIR in Bihar since the top court did not impose any stay on the same.

Subsequently, the ECI on October 27 2025 extended the SIR to other States and Union Territories, including West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party has already filed a petition before the apex court challenging SIR in Tamil Nadu.
