Justice Saurabh Banerjee of Delhi High Court recently took strong exception to a lawyer's conduct in a case after she said that the judge was related to another lawyer appearing in the matter.

During a hearing on September 12, Justice Banerjee categorically said that the allegation was not true and that the lawyer was a "blatant liar".

"In the open court, she had the audacity... She came to my court master and the court master came to my room (to tell me about it). I said there was nothing of the sort," the judge said.

He said that such lies need to be nipped in the bud.

"It is very unnerving for a sitting judge to come to know, in open court that someone says I am your relative... I don't know how many relatives will sprout up if this is not nipped in the bud," he said.

Justice Banerjee warned that he will pass orders debarring the lawyer from practising before the Delhi High Court.

"She is going to be debarred from appearing in Delhi High Court, confirmed. Her license will be surrendered. I am not going to make a change," Justice Banerjee remarked.

Justice Banerjee asked the leaders of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) present in the court, how they would feel if they were in his shoes.

"I ask you also how you would feel if it were said you are related to someone," he asked.

Senior Advocate and DHCBA President N Hariharan also appeared before the Bench.

After some deliberations, Justice Banerjee said he will not pass the orders debarring the lawyer but cautioned her.

“If this is repeated again, I’ll see under what circumstances you’ll practice as a lawyer,” he finally said.
