In a bid to evaluate the functioning of the subordinate judiciary, Senior Judges of the Delhi High Court, led by Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal, today made surprise visits to District Courts in Delhi..The judges’ teams which went to various District Courts included Justices Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, Sanjiv Khanna, GS Sistani, S Muralidhar and Vipin Sanghi..The inspections were conducted to find out if judges were sitting on time in the lower courts..This is the first such inspection this year. On August 31 last year, similar inspections were conducted and many judges were found to be coming late to court..Interestingly, during that inspection, Justice Mittal had ditched her official car for an auto-rickshaw to reach Patiala House court in order to keep the special operation under wraps..The Delhi High Court has in the past few months taken a strict stance on laxity and impropriety in the subordinate judiciary. Earlier this month, Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kapoor was retired, as per the decision of the Full Court headed by Mittal J. He was earlier transferred to the Tis Hazari complex for granting bail to the Unitech developers..Similarly, one Nitesh Gupta – who was set to take charge as Metropolitan Magistrate in Tis Hazari – was made to demit office. Gupta was retired after he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation with respect to interest free loans taken by him to the tune of Rs. 5.73 crore..Story to be updated.
