The Central government on Tuesday cleared the appointment of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.."In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and direct him to assume charge of the office of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court," the notification uploaded on Department of Justice website..The Supreme Court Collegium had on January 7 recommended that Justice Upadhyaya, who is presently the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, be transferred to the Delhi High Court.Justice Upadhyaya enrolled as a lawyer in 1991 and practiced before the Allahabad High Court.He was appointed as a judge of the Allahabad High Court in November 2011 and was made a permanent judge in August 2013.He was appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on July 29, 2023.Justice Upadhyaya will take over as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from Justice Vibhu Bakhru who is currently serving as acting Chief Justice..The Delhi High Court is currently functioning with 35 judges as against a sanctioned strength of 60..[Read Notification]
