The Central Government has notified the establishment of a Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Bench in Jammu. (Official Gazette - Jammu CAT)
As per the Notification published today in the Official Gazette, this newly established Bench will exercise jurisdiction over Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union territory of Ladakh.
On May 22, the Supreme Court had issued notice in a plea seeking the setting up of a permanent Bench of CAT in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir for hearing service matters.
The Petitioners had sought a direction to quash April 29, 2020 Notification by the Central Government, which had conferred jurisdiction to the CAT in Chandigarh to hear service matters arising from the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.
It was contended that the April 29 Notification was unconstitutional and in violation of the constitutional principles.
While restoring the pre-April 29 jurisdiction of CAT Chandigarh, Central Government has now notified the creation of a new CAT for Jammu, within days of issuance of notice in the plea.
