Collegium recommends two lawyers for elevation as Judges of Calcutta High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of two Advocates – Tirthankar Ghosh and Hiranmay Bhattacharyya as Judges of the Calcutta High Court.

In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend that S/Shri (1) Tirthankar Ghosh, and (2) Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, Advocates, be appointed as Judges of the Calcutta High Court. Their inter se seniority be fixed as per the existing practice”, Collegium Resolution dated December 4, 2018 reads.

Ghosh and Bhattacharyya were recommended for elevation by the Collegium of the Calcutta High Court on May 4, 2017.  The proposal was taken up by the Supreme Court Collegium in its March 26, 2018 meeting as well. However, the Collegium then decided to defer the consideration of the above proposal.

As per the Resolution, the names have been recommended by Supreme Court Collegium after scrutinizing all the material on record as well as the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file.
