Collegium proposes Calcutta HC Judge, Dipankar Datta for appointment as next Bombay High Court Chief Justice

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended that Calcutta High Court Judge, Justice Dipanker Datta be elevated as the next Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

The present Bombay High Court Chief Justice, BP Dharmadhikari, who was sworn into office on March 21, is due to retire on April 28.

Justice Dutta was born in February 1965 to former judge of the Calcutta High Court, late Justice Salil Kumar Datta. Justice Dipanker Datta obtained his LLB degree from the Universtiy of Calcutta in 1989, as part of the first 5-year law course batch.

He enrolled as an advocate the same year, following which he practiced primarily in the Supreme Court and High Courts in Constitutional and civil matters.

He has served as the junior standing counsel for the State of West Bengal between May 2002 and January 2004, and as a counsel for the Central Government since 1998. He was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 22, 2006.
