The Delhi Gymkhana Club has approached the Delhi High Court against a Central government order directing it to vacate its 27.3-acre premises in Lutyens Delhi by June 5. .The plea was mentioned before Justice Avneesh Jhingan by Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who sought urgent hearing.The judge agreed to list the case for hearing on May 26, Tuesday.The plea has been filed by Gymkhana club member Vijay Khurana. .On May 22, the Land and Development Office (L&DO) directed the club to vacate and hand over its 27.3-acre premises at 2, Safdarjung Road. The order invoked clause 4 of the original lease deed, which allows the government to resume possession if the land is required for “public purpose.” The government stated that the land, located near the Prime Minister’s residence and other high-security installations in Lutyens’ Delhi, was needed for “strengthening and securing of defence infrastructure,” governance facilities and other “vital public security purposes.” "Upon such re-entry, the entire plot of land measuring 27.3 acres, along with all buildings, standing erections, structures, lawns, and fittings thereon, shall vest absolutely in the Lessor, i.e., the President o f India, through the Land & Development Office," the government said.
