The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Delhi Police to deploy security in the Karkardooma Court for the Shahdara Bar Association elections scheduled to be held on May 9..The bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh, Navin Chawla and C Hari Shankar passed the order in a case in which it has been monitoring the elections to various bar associations in Delhi.The Court directed the police to take strict action against any group of individuals, lawyers or non-lawyers who may cause disturbance or obstruction to the smooth conduct of the elections."The deployment shall be made by Delhi Police as per the status report. It is to ensure that the lawyers/ voters who have been given entry carry the proximity card. They would be permitted into the area only after proper verification," it ordered..The elections to all bar associations in Delhi except the Saket and Shahdara associations concluded on March 21. Retired Justice Talwant Singh, the Chairperson of the Shahdara Bar Association Election Committee, had recently highlighted the lack of security at the court complex.Considering the apprehensions expressed by Justice Singh, the Court had during the previous hearing directed Delhi Police to inform it about providing adequate security for the fair and peaceful conduct of the elections to the Shahdara Bar Association ..Today, Delhi Police submitted a status report on its planned security arrangements outside the court. The Court directed that the deployment plan be followed and also ordered that a CCTV feed be made available to the local Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)."The election area shall be covered by CCTV. One feed will be made available to DCP, who shall use the same for real-time action if required," the Court said. .The Court added that the election committee would be free to approach any Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) or Delhi University, or any other body, for making available Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the polls.It also recorded the submission by the candidates that they are willing to cover the cost of using EVMs. The committee is free to collect contributions uniformly from all contesting candidates to cover the cost of EVM use in elections, the Court said.On a request by the candidates, the Court further directed that only one authorised representative of the contesting candidate shall be allowed in the court during the vote count.
