Economic Reservation: Constitution (103rd Amendment) Act, 2019 comes into force

The Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019 which introduces a ten percent economic reservation for those belonging to economically weaker sections of society has come into force from today i.e. January 14, 2019.

The Central government has notified the same in the Gazette of India.

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019, the Central Government hereby appoints the 14th January, 2019 as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force.”, the Central Government Notification dated January 14 reads.

President Ram Nath Kovind had signed off on the Act on January 12, 2019 after it was passed by Parliament last week during its Winter Session.

The Constitution (103rd) Amendment Act, 2019, which was passed by the Parliament in a jiffy, has already been challenged before the Supreme Court by NGO Youth for Equality.
