Foreign judges from UK, Nepal, Bhutan, Brazil, Kenya visit Supreme Court ahead of UNCITRAL event

The Supreme Court on Friday welcomed a delegation of senior judges from five foreign countries, with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant introducing the visiting dignitaries in courtroom no. 1.

The visiting delegation included the Chief Justice of Nepal, Manoj Kumar Sharma, a judge of the UK Supreme Court, a judge of Bhutan's Supreme Court, and judges from Brazil and Kenya.

Attorney General R Venkataramani welcomed the delegation, describing India as a meeting point of diverse traditions and legal values.

"India is a confluence of culture and values. We are looking forward to the interaction this evening. This will also show the Swadeshi jurisprudence of India," he said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta echoed the sentiment, saying the brief visit would only offer a glimpse of the country.

"India is one of the finest country with diversity. But two days is very less to explore a country such as India," remarked Mehta.

Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, also welcomed the visiting judges and highlighted the significance of the occasion.

"This is a significant moment, and we welcome all the judges to participate in the UNCITRAL 60th anniversary...Our judiciary is being followed internationally," said Singh.

The gathering occurred ahead of events marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

UNCITRAL, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, is the principal UN body responsible for the harmonisation and modernisation of international trade law. 2026 marks its 60th anniversary.

As part of the anniversary, UNCITRAL is encouraging commemorative events across member States between July 2026 and July 2027. It aims to bring together judges, governments, academics and arbitration practitioners to discuss developments in international commercial law.
