Justice BV Nagarathna nominated Chairperson of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

Supreme Court Justice BV Nagarathna has been nominated as the Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) with effect from June 29.

A gazette notification intimating the development was issued on July 2 by the National Legal Services Authority.

The nomination of Justice Nagarathna was made by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Justice Nagarathna, who has been serving on the Supreme Court since 2021, will now head the SCLSC, succeeding Justice J.K. Maheshwari, who demitted office upon his retirement.

The SCLSC is responsible for providing free legal services to eligible litigants in matters before the Supreme Court.
