Karti Chidambaram today undertook to appear before the Investigating Officer (IO) in the corruption case pertaining to grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to INX Media.

Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium, who appeared for Chidambaram before a Bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud, told the Court that Chidambaram is ready to appear before the IO.

This was after Subramanium made a slew of arguments pertaining to the case. The Bench, however said that the scope of the issue before it was very limited. CJI Khehar said,

“You have to satisfy the Investigating Officer. Tell all this to the Investigating Officer. They will record your submissions. Right now they have only restrained you from going abroad. Why tell all these stories to us?”

Subramanium agreed to appear before the Investigating Officer provided Chidambaram is allowed to take a lawyer with him.

The Court acceded to the request and recorded in its order that Chidambaram will appear before the IO on August 23.

“He shall also have the liberty to be accompanied by an advocate. The advocate shall remain in the room adjoining the room where investigation takes place.”

The matter has now been posted for hearing on August 28.

The Madras High Court had earlier granted interim relief to Chidambaram against Lookout circulars (LOC) issued by the CBI. The Centre had challenged the same in the Supreme Court.

The CBI had alleged that Chidambaram was involved in a corruption case pertaining to grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to INX Media and an FIR was lodged on June 15 this year. LOCs were issued on June 16 and 18, and the same were succesfully challenged by the petitioners by invoking the writ jurisdiction of the Madras High Court.
