Kerala High Court grants bail to school teacher arrested in Vadakara drug trafficking case

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday granted bail to a school teacher arrested in connection with a drug trafficking case registered by the Vadakara police [Kavya K v State of Kerala].

Justice Kauser Edappagath allowed the bail application of 29-year-old Kavya K, who is the third accused in the case.

While granting bail, the Court took into account Kavya's judicial custody since July 25.

"The applicant was remanded to judicial custody on 25.07.2026. The investigation is almost over. The recovery has been effected. The applicant has no criminal antecedents. For these reasons, I do not find any reason to hold that the continued detention of the applicant is required for any purpose. Hence, the applicant is entitled to be released on bail," the Court said.

The bail plea was filed in connection with the crime registered by the Vadakara Police.

Kavya was booked under Section 22(b) and Section 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act), for offences relating to possession of psychotropic substances and criminal conspiracy.

According to the prosecution, Kavya and the other accused had allegedly conspired to transport and sell narcotics drugs.

Police found one of the accused in possession of 2.108 grams of MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy, a synthetic drug) and alleged that financial transactions connected with the offence were carried out through Kavya's bank account and that of another accused.

Kavya subsequently moved before the High Court seeking bail and argued that she had been falsely implicated in the case.

She stated that was no material connecting her to the alleged crime.

The prosecution opposed the plea, maintaining that the transactions were part of her intentional criminal acts.

The Court, however, ordered her release after noting that the investigation was almost complete and that she had no criminal antecedents.

It granted her bail subject to several conditions, including executing ₹1 lakh bond with two solvent sureties and appearing before the investigating officer every Saturday until further orders.

Kavya was also directed to cooperate with the investigation, refrain from contacting witnesses or tramping with evidence. She was also ordered not to leave Kerala without the trial court's permission.
