The Delhi High Court today issued notice in a petition seeking evacuation of Indian students from Iran in view of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Notice to the Central Government was issued by a Single Judge Bench of Justice IS Mehta in a petition preferred by parents of the Indian students who are studying in various universities in Iran and are currently stranded.

The Court has also sought a status report from the Central Government on the steps taken by it to evacuate Indian students.

The Petitioners have asserted that due to the suspension of flights, the students have been stranded in Iran and are thus facing a threat to their lives and health.

The Petition reads,

"Several cases of infection has been detected in past few days, fearing major outbreak the University has decided to close down the colleges and the hostel facilities and cancelled the exams thus students have been advised to proceed to their respective countries. The students have been trying to find a mode to travel back to India to save their lives in this extreme hazardous situation. The students are however shocked and surprised to know that no flights are going from Iran to India."

The Petitioners have, therefore, sought a direction to the Central Government to arrange evacuation of Indian students through flight, ships, cruise or any other feasible mode.

The Petitioners have also sought a direction to the Central Government to grant “basic medical aid and precaution material” such as masks, sanitizers etc to Indian students in Iran till an arrangement for their return is made.

Filed through Advocates Fozia Rahman and Sikander A Siddiqui, the Petition also seeks direction to conduct “Thermo Imaging” before the flight of the Indian students back home and to provide them with quarantine facilities immediately upon their arrival.

The matter would be heard next on March 11.
