Bar & Bench

In view of its restricted functioning due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the National Green Tribunal has cancelled its summer vacation scheduled for the month of June 2020.

In its Notification issued today, the NGT took note of the fact that the lockdown which was announed last month has now been extended by the Central Government till May 3, 2020, and said,

"As part of measures to contain spread of pandemic Coronavirus, during the lockdown phase announced by the Government till 14.4.2020, the NGT restricted its functioning only to hearing of urgent matters while its staff had been working from home."

Therefore, in order to make up for the loss of working hours and to obviate the hardship faced by the lawyers and litigants, the NGT Calendar for 2020 was modified to the effect that:-

"The summer vacations for the NGT as scheduled for the month of June 2020, stand cancelled. The NGT would be fully functional for the whole month of June 2020, save for Saturdays, Sundays and Gazetted Holidays. The Registry of NGT shall be functioning on all Saturdays as well, except second Saturday."

The cancellation is subject to further modification, if and when fresh directions are issued by the Government.

The Delhi High Court and the Telangana High Court have already cancelled their summer break for the year.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has also passed a unanimous resolution urging the Chief Justice of India to cancel the summer vacation this year to compensate for time lost due to Court's restricted functioning during the lockdown.
