Delhi High Court grants bail to man who impersonated NIA officer to cheat woman

The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted bail to a man who impersonated an National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer with the intention to cheat a woman of her money [Netik Rawat v. State and Ors]. .Justice Anu Malhotra allowed the applicant to be released on bail subject to furnishing a bail bond of ₹50,000 with two sureties of the like amount..The accused-applicant had allegedly impersonated an NIA officer and induced the complainant to give him a sum of ₹10,000 on the pretext of helping her in a matrimonial dispute.Subsequently, the applicant demanded ₹2 lakh more from the woman, who at this point became suspicious. When she asked the applicant to return her money, he allegedly threatened to implicate her in a false case. When the complainant inquired about the applicant from the NIA office, she found that there was no such person working with the NIA..A first information report was subsequently lodged against the applicant and another personwho prepared a fake NIA identity card for him, after which the duo were arrested. He thus approached the Delhi High Court for bail.The applicant sought bail on grounds that he was in custody since June this year, and the co-accused had already been granted bail. He further pleaded that his wife is physically disabled.
