[Delhi Riots] Khalid Saifi delivered provocative speeches like Umar Khalid: Delhi Police tells Delhi High Court

The Delhi Police told the Delhi High Court on Thursday that Umar Khalid and Khalid Saifi’s discharge in the case registered at Khajuri Khas does not mean there is no evidence against them in the larger conspiracy of the Delhi Riots..Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad made his submissions for the Delhi Police before a Division Bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagar, opposing the plea filed by Saifi seeking bail in the Delhi Riots conspiracy case..Prasad also challenged the argument made by Senior Advocate Rebecca John, who had appeared for Saifi, that there were no provocative speeches delivered by him.“That is a wrong statement. Not only are there speeches, but they are identical and in line with Umar Khalid’s speeches…All the speeches by and large have commonalities. He (Saifi) is a resident of Khajuri Khas but was giving statements in Jamia,” the SPP stated.He also sought to distinguish Saifi’s case from that of Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan, who was granted bail by the special court in the same FIR. Prasad said that Jahan was not a part of any of the WhatsApp groups where the conspiracy was hatched, and therefore, the defence cannot claim any parity between the two cases..The SPP said that the defence is trying to create a narrative that Saifi is a victim of custodial violence even though his complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has already been closed.“If they still have a grievance, they have all the remedies. They choose not to agitate the issue there but come here in a bail proceeding.
