Kerala High Court comes to the rescue of five mariners stranded on abandoned ship off Kochi coast since April 2020

The continued ‘detention’ aboard the vessel is a result of a provision in maritime law which requires required seamen to be ‘signed off’ and discharged before they can leave a ship once their contract ends.

The Kerala High Court's intervention has led to rescue of five mariners who were stranded off the aboard an ‘abandoned’ fishing vessel off the Kochi coast since April 2020 (M Thayu Manavar v. Union of India).
