Madras High Court restrains unauthorised broadcast of Shahid Kapoor starrer O'Romeo

The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted an interim anti-piracy injunction to protect the copyright in the upcoming Shahid Kapoor-starrer O'Romeo [Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment v. BSNL]..Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy passed an interim order restraining the unauthorised broadcast, transmission or dissemination of the film by internet service providers (ISPs) and cable television operators ahead of the film's theatrical release..The Court observed that in matters involving pre-release piracy, the injury caused to producers is immediate and irreversible. Once a film is unlawfully circulated online, the financial and commercial damage cannot be undone.At the same time, the Court noted that expansive “John Doe” or dynamic injunctions could potentially affect the legitimate business interests of intermediaries and service providers.Balancing these concerns, the Court directed that the injunction would operate subject to the producer furnishing an indemnity undertaking in favour of the respondents to compensate for any legitimate business losses arising from the operation of the order..The interim relief was granted in a civil suit filed by the film’s producer Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment citing apprehensions of unlawful telecast or online circulation prior to and immediately after its theatrical release..O Romeo is an upcoming Hindi action thriller directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. Slated for release on February 13, 2026, the film stars Shahid Kapoor alongside Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar and others.
