The Supreme Court has recently allowed a nine-month extension for the completion of the trial in the Sheena Bora murder case, while making it clear that no further extension will be granted [Indrani Mukerjea v. Central Bureau of Investigation].

The extension was granted after the Special Judge, CBI, City Civil and Sessions Court, Greater Bombay, wrote to the top court seeking additional time to conclude the trial.

A Bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh allowed the request and extended the timeline by nine months.

However, the Court made it clear that no further extension would be granted.

Considering the prayer made, the time to conclude the trial stands extended by 9 months while making it clear that no further prayer seeking extension of time will be entertained," the Court said.

The Bench also granted liberty to Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the case and mother of the deceased Sheena Bora, to file a fresh application seeking permission to travel abroad.

"Liberty is granted to the accused person to file a fresh application seeking permission to travel abroad as mentioned in order dated 12.02.2025," the Court said.

Mukerjea was arrested in 2015 and chargesheeted as an accused for offences punishable under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)

According to the CBI, Bora was murdered in 2012 by Mukerjea with the help of her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, then-husband Peter Mukerjea (divorced since 2018) and driver Shyamvar Rai.

The murder came to light in 2015 after Rai disclosed details of the crime following his arrest in another case.

Mukerjea was granted bail by the top court in 2022 after it noted that she had been in custody for over six and a half years.
