State authorities cannot act based on superstition or unscientific public fears, the Madras High Court emphasised recently in a case where religious idols were removed by local authorities from a private residence in Chennai after nearby residents linked the worship of these idols to "unnatural deaths" in the area [A Karthik Vs District Collector].
